Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve

 On Friday Room 3 & 4 travelled to Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve. 

We started the day by meeting Amy and Joe in the carpark of Te Tapuwae O Rongokako Marine Reserve. They fitted us with wetsuits before reminding us of the hand signals we needed to use in the water. We had learnt about these the week before when Amy and Jo came to school and taught us to how use snorkel and googles in the school pool. 

Jo shared the story about Rongokako a famous warrior who was also a giant. If you are lucky you can see his footprint at low tide, at the marine reserve. Legend has it that Rongokako was racing Paoa (another maori warrior) to a girl up the coast. Paoa paddled his waka while Rongokako raced across the land. 

Students were allocated teams and an adult and off they went into the water. Many students put their googles on and could see small triple fin fish in. the shallow water of Te Tapuwae O Rongokako. Some students ventured out into deeper water where they saw kina, crayfish and lots of seaweed. 

What an incredible opportunity to explore and connect with Tangaroa. Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible. 

Collaborative Art

We started the term by looking at Vexx. Vexx is a doodle artist who has his own youtube channel. 

We looked at his style of art and began our own piece of collaborative art. Lily-Rose noticed that Vexx included words and drawings in his work. We decided to include our school values in our art.

Pihitia Station

 Room one travelled to Pihitia Station with Moana Syndicate at the end of last term. 

We worked our way around a series of rotations and learnt about how technology helps on farms in the 21st century. We started by learning about pest control before splitting into smaller groups. We milked a cow and watched a butcher but up lamb. Norm showed us his drone and motor bikes while we helped Demelza muster a paddock and chase the sheep into the sheep yards. Lastly, we watched Nic shear a sheep and talked about the importance of wool. 

Thank you so much to the Williams family for having us and all the other families who came and helped. 

Skipping

Room One students have been skipping every day to help build our fitness for the school cross country. Our goal as a class is to enjoy running. 

We have been graphing our skips in our math book. Most students are seeing a progression over the term. We have discovered that there are variables that influence our results including having the right sized skipping rope and wearing covered shoes. 

We love skipping in Room One so much that we even choose to skip during our morning tea and lunch times. 

Tonui Collab

 On Monday Room One visited the Tonui Collab to learn more about computational thinking. 

Jules welcomed us as we arrived, she was our facilitator. We worked through a number of hands on activities that required us to give and follow instructions. We had to direct our friends through a maze of hoops and write codes for lego people to navigate through a maze of cyclopes to get gems.

After morning tea we got to play with Sphero robots. Initially students had to get their drivers licence before they were set with small challenges. 

We had Helena and Tracey joins us. Thanks for helping us ladies. We had such a fantastic time!!

Tairawhiti Environment Centre

This term Room One and Room Four (Honu) went to the Tairawhiti Environment Centre. 

We had a fantastic time and learnt heaps about how to do our bit for the environment. 
We had 6 workshop rotations with 3 teachers, Kauri, Kirsty and Steph.

We are very thankful to be able to have such a rewarding experience. 

Wolfe's Surfboard

While this is a class blog, we just have to acknowledge the AMAZING surfboard piece of art created by our very own, Wolfe!
Wolfe has been chipping away at this at home for a few months, and his effort and talent is so impressive!
Room 1 love it so much, and can't wait to see it up on the wall by the skate ramp.
Amazing job, Wolfe!

Holes

This term we are reading the book 'Holes' by Louis Sachar. 

We are completing tasks each week during reading time related to the chapters that we have read that week.

Annihilation

Annihilation... what is it?

Annihilation is a game that we play every morning. We love it! It is a dodgeball style game. Here is how you play.

Aim of the Game: To get players out by throwing the ball at them, while avoiding being hit with another player's ball.

Rules:
1. The ball must hit you on the full in order to be out
2. When you are out, you must sit down. You get to join back in the game when the person who got you out gets out. (e.g. If Kayla got me out, I sit down and wait until Kayla gets out by another player. Then I get back up)
3. If you catch a ball that someone throws at you, then they are out.
4. You are only allowed to throw balls at people when they are in the designated play area.
5. Players may leave the play area only to fetch a ball.
6. Players are allowed one ball at a time only.

We have varied the game slightly from how we played it at the beginning of the term.
We have added some new rules:
1.  When you are out, you are allowed to throw a ball at someone who is playing (but you can't throw it at the person who got you out). That way you can get back in the game quicker. You are not allowed to move to get a ball and you must stay sitting down.
2. You can join with people to create a 'team'. These people work with you to get out the people you want to target, or they will get out the player that got you out so that you can get back in the game quicker.

Eight weeks of playing and we aren't sick of it yet!

Sound Effect (Onomatopoeia) Art

We have been reading 'Fing' by David Walliams this term and one thing that we have noticed is that there are a LOT of sound effects throughout the book.

We decided to create some art with a sound effect (onomatopoeia). Our focus was learning to do block lettering.

To do this, we:
- used one square per letter to ensure our letters were the same size
- referred to a block lettering A-Z model to use as a guide

Kiaora everyone!

My name is Sophie and I am the new teacher in Room 1 now that Koka Jess is on maternity leave.

The term is absolutely whizzing by... hence the delay in getting a post up!

I'm absolutely loving my time at WBS and in Room 1; they are a fantastic bunch and we have been busy getting to know each other and establish new routines and programmes.

A highlight of the term so far has been our daily fitness- playing a fun game called 'Annihilation' (even if the students do gang up on their teacher!)

Welcome to Room 1, 2019

Kia Ora and welcome to Room 1's Class Blog for 2019....

We have had a fantastic start to the year and have made great connections, routines and have a lovely hum within our class already!  We have created our Class treaty and 'signed' our names by designing and decorating our very own waka paddles for our beautifully carved mini waka.  

As a class we have been focussing on our school values of: RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY and RESILIENCE and what these qualities look like, sound like and feel like in and out of our classroom environment.  

I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know your tamariki and really loved the Ako Tahi evening last week.  A big thank you for the parents that could make it, if you couldn't, please feel free to pop in at anytime to introduce yourself and/or touch base.  Also, remember to come in and see me, or flick me an email should you have any questions or concerns.  I am looking forward to the term ahead.

Turanganui Kapa Haka Festival

Tu mai ra ngā tamariki o te kura ō Wainui ...

Today we performed at the Turanganui Kapa Haka Festival.  We have been preparing for this event for the past few terms.

                   We came to school donned in our House colours.

The day started with track events - 50m, 75m, 100m & 200m sprints; heats then finals.  After lunch NUI syndicate rotated through field events - high jump, ball throw and long jump.                                                                                          We all had a great day - awesome participation and heaps of smiles:-)

Open Day at Hamanatua - Actions Speak Louder than Words!

We are off to a rolling start for term 4!!  The weather was spot on for us as we headed down to Hamanatua for our Open Day.  It was great to see whanau and friends come along to share our Learning Journey.

Each work team stood and shared their part in the Hamanatua Inquiry - everyone did a fantastic job of sharing their journey with this project.  Ka mau te wehi!!!

I was so glad that I came down to the Hamanatua Stream yesterday and that I caught most of your presentation. WOW - I was absolutely blown away by your confidence and the knowledge you had acquired from your Inquiry learning. I loved the way you had obviously engaged with the community and that your voices are being heard not just locally but at regional council level too. 

You spoke as experts and it seemed like everyone was involved. Walking around the area I thought Hamanatua looks great! The pamphlet was fantastic as it made me think back to what it was like before...you must feel very proud of the difference you have made!

Actions really do speak louder than words.

The 'Gizzy Hard' Duo, Amy and Stu,  stopped in at WBS this morning -

Room 4 students have been making miniature houses and invited Stu and Amy along to judge them. Nui syndicate classes gathered in the hall for the announcement of the winning house and for a Q and A time with Amy & Stu.

A Surprise Visitor to Room 1 MAYOR Meng Foon!!!

As you already know, from previous posts, our Inquiry focus has been Actions Speak Louder than Words and our class has been planting native trees, weeding, mulching, water testing Hamanatua and making signs for our plants down at Hamanatua.

Today was supposed to be our Open Day down at Hamanatua to showcase all our mahi we had done there BUT due to the rain, sadly, we had to postpone - so we were quite disappointed.
We had settled in to our daily routine getting on with maths when Koka Nolian arrived at the door with a visitor.
To our surprise Mayor Meng Foon was standing in our classroom!  He had gone down to Hamanatua to attend our Open Day and when he saw there were no kids there he thought he would pay us a visit.
Mayor Meng stayed and talked with us about our mahi down at Hamanatua.  He was very interested in our project and shared his thoughts about why our project was so important for the environment and for future generations.  He is looking forward to attending our Open Day next term:-)
What a great start to the day after all!

WBS Talent Quest 2018 . Wow! Amazing! Talented! A few words to describe the performers at our talent show today!

The annual Wainui Beach School Talent Quest was held yesterday. There were .21 performances and they were all great!!  There were gymnastics routines, band performances, soloists - singing, pianists, dancers (Can't Touch This!!), Jump Jammers and Motorcross Movies.

Below are the Room 1 performers...

Buddy Classes Weave Together.

                    A whatu pōkeka is a baby blanket.  Feathers are carefully woven into the inside to provide warmth, comfort, security and refuge from the elements.
The pōkeka takes the shape of the child as they learn and grow.

With our buddy class, we shared our thoughts about how we know we belong at school and what makes us feel valued at school.  We recorded our responses on the feathers and together wove our whatu pōkeka.

Harakeke Planting at Hamanatua .

Thankfully the weather was great today as we headed down to Hamanatua to plant 48 Harakeke plants that had been donated to us by the Native Tree Project.    

The harakeke were planted as a safety net for people who use the pathway - cyclists, skateboarders and scooter riders.  The pathway is quite steep and runs alongside Hamanatua Stream.  The harakeke will allow for a soft landing and not a SPLASH should anyone get the speed-wobbles.
